Environmental Benchmarking

Benchmarking may be used as a helpful management tool in minimizing potential environmental impact. By using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), it is possible to document development trends and compare performance with similar organizations, activities or operations. This may contribute to systematic work towards improved environmental performances.

add energy's experience with environmental data processing runs back until the early 1990'ies. Some of it is summarized as follows:

• Extensive consultancy work on behalf of OLF, the Norwegian Oil Industry Association, for instance related to the annual environmental reporting to the KLIF (Climate and Pollution Agency). Up until EW (Environmental Web) came on line, it was add energy (then known as Novatech) that operated the common industry emissions and discharge database on behalf of OLF. We have also continued assignments related to the EW data.
• Our own environmental management system, NEMS Accounter, contains all key data required to perform environmental benchmarking, like information on chemicals, waste, energy usage, discharges to sea and emissions to air. NEMS Accounter gives full export opportunities for anyone with user access to the data.
• We have also developed a forecasting tool, NEMS Forecaster, which allows us to supplement missing data, and to check relationships between operational aspects and the impact on environmental key data like for instance CO₂ emissions.

With this history, add energy has been building up the experience and understanding necessary not only to calculate KPIs, but also to interpret the results, and – if relevant – to propose actions.
